Whats the main difference between PvP and PvE servers? I hear even PvP players have to raid to get decent gear.

Yes. The difference between PvP and PvE servers is incredibly minor and people overemphasize it.

On PvP servers, in zones intended for levels 20 and higher you automatically are "flagged" for PvP. Any other player who is also flagged can attack or be attacked without any precautions. This can be quite fun at max level, where you can actively seek out people in high-end zones and fight. And quite exciting at lower levels, where you always in fear of a high level spotting you and killing you. The only penality for death in WoW World PvP is a corpse walk, so it's minor.

On PvE servers, that rule doesn't apply. Players have to manually flag themselves for World PvP combat. That prevents the aforementioned problem of dying at lower levels, but it reduces the replay value at max level.

Both servers have the same Raids (high-level method of gaining gear) and Battlegrounds (equivilant of Alliance Battles. Except more fun.) Both servers also get gear through the PvP Rewards system.

I'm going to roll a Blood Elf Warlock (or maybe a Rogue, since the buffs they received since I played last are insane) on the PvP server which is released after the expansion.

PvP servers sound more interesting...

I'd need to buy the game+the exspansion when its released to stay in the loop?

You only need to buy the expansion when you hit near the level cap or if you want to start a Blood Elf/Draenei. Otherwise, the standard game is fine.

Doesn't matter once you learn how long it takes to level.

Well, I decided against going back to WoW. Again, I want to attempt to have a girlfriend.

So I'll probably go back to old-fashioned console gaming.

I used to play WoW. I played during open beta, back in October of 2004. I dislike WoW a whole lot. I havent played it in about 1 year and I think its the biggest waste of money. While The Burning Crusade looks good with content, I am conviced that its a waste of money. $40US for the coming expanstion or $60AUS. And people have to still pay for play? I find that a joke.

But play WoW if you seem you want to play it. Its very different to GW and its much more of a grind if anything. Everything in WoW is a grind. EVERYTHING. The pvp system is a joke still. Gear still unbalances players greatly and people will still have to raid for gear.

Haha. If you play it casually there is no problem. I'm getting back to console gaming some too though, but guildwars is getting less and less time.

I played WoW from beta (March 2004) until about 8 months after release (June 2005), and then came back again for a few months earlier this year. Great game until L60, but I didn't like raiding, so I stopped after I was epic'd out.

WoW is pretty played out, and TBC will be more of the same. Still, it'll be a month or two of entertainment, which is not bad for the price.

Of course, Guild Wars, despite being perhaps the best designed game I've ever played, is getting a little long in the tooth too, as there is (by design intent) no item progression in GW. Eventually you get to that point where you think... damn, there really is nothing interesting to do in GW, there is no point whatsoever to any loot in the entire game, or any interesting way to improve my character. Everyone is the same. Unless you PvP of course, that is still always fun, and the only reason I am playing GW in the first place.

Still, you can only eat at the same 5-star restaurant for so long until you need a change. GW is an amazing game, but I don't think it has a bright future. While its PvP is the best of any game today, its PvE is quite inferior to that of any mmorpg. There is also no real in game community to the degree there is on a server in an mmorpg. And as far as PvP goes, it's practically impossible to get friends to get into GW PvP, as not only do they need to buy 3 campaigns and 3 campaigns worth of unlocks, but they need to understand how most of the classes play and understand what the skills do. The learning curve is so extreme for a newcomer that most people lose interest. With a straightforward game like WoW they can log in and start having fun immediately.

I'm waiting for Age of Conan, which will have a persistent global world, with world PvP (like typical mmorpgs), but also a sort of GvG (castle sieges) where the number of participants is limited so there is no zerging.

I'll always miss GW's skill system, though. Hopefully a new mmorpg will shamelessly copy it.

GW PvE < WoW PvE

wait wat? i thought WoW pvp was great, the only flaw is the difference in gear inbalance...

ok, back on topic
ive played WoW for around 8 months, havnt bought tbc since i just got nightfall and made a return to GW (altho considering how nf pve is turning out it might shorten my stay xD)

Overall the game is great, amount of players, zones, dungeons, professions etc. however it gets really hard after u reach lvl 60.. since most guilds r the 5 hr non-stop mc raiding type... so i took a break once i got afew epics and the basic dungeon gear. so its quite different from Gw, where u cant just solo uw, go power trading etc and become all godlike, in WoW, u have to work for ur gear, theres no other way to get wat u want

I used to play WoW i didnt like the way you had to be lvl to 50+ to actually be able to enjoy the game. GW "ends" at lvl20 witch is pretty fast. And the pvp is is the best of any game i've played.

If for some reason i quit GW. I'l probably go to Aion(When its finally released )

Which is kinda like teaching the people who play it a life-like lesson... you have to work hard to succeed and get what you want.
